Hi everyone! My name is Naomi Sakaguchi, I am a third year undergraduate student at Oregon State University and I am studying Animal Science with a pre-vet option. I grew up in a suburb of Portland called Tigard, where I completed all of my pre-college education. I have always loved living in the Pacific Northwest but I love to travel. I am of Japanese descent and am very proud and appreciative of the experiences I have had as a result of experiencing different cultures and worldviews while growing up.

I knew I wanted to attend the Oregon State University Honors College because I enjoyed the atmosphere of the campus and felt a connection to the school despite the large campus and numerous students. After graduation I plan to enter Veterinary School and eventually pursue a career in small animal-based internal medicine. Since I was small, I cannot remember a time in which I did not believe that working with animals was what I was meant to do. I grew up riding horses and always had pets so when the question about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life was posed, I knew almost immediately. With the help of the numerous advisors available to students, both through Oregon State and its Honors College, I have been able set my path towards what I am most excited for in the future, becoming a veterinarian. Through the Honors College, the Pre-Vet Scholars program has allowed me to meet other Honors, pre-vet students who are just as driven and inspired as I am.

I am currently in the process of completing my undergraduate thesis for the Honors College in the Animal Science Department. I initially became involved in research during my first year at Oregon State while assisting in research for the Human-Animal Interaction Lab. With the assistance of other members of the lab, I developed the idea for what would become the thesis I am currently working on. Although the process seemed daunting at first, the resources available through the Honors College made things much easier.

I had a very smooth transition between high school and college and as a result I would like to help make that transition easier for others. If you have any questions about the Honors College or anything else related to Oregon State, please don’t hesitate to email me!
