Hi everyone! My name is Samantha Finlay, I am in my fourth year at Oregon State University and I am studying philosophy with a minor in Spanish. My hometown is Rockaway Beach, OR which is a small town on the Oregon Coast. I attended a small high school – my graduating class was just 45 people, some of whom I had known since pre-school – and I wound up at Oregon State University.
Though I had not originally planned to go to OSU I decided to attend because of affordability and my acceptance to the Honors College. I wasn’t immediately excited to start college, but when I toured the campus in the spring of my senior year, I knew this was where I was meant to be. Since then I have fallen so in love with Oregon State and the wonderful experiences I’ve had here.
I entered college a member of the University Exploratory Studies Program, because I had no idea what to major in. I knew I liked a handful of things, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to head into a STEM field or the Liberal Arts. I took a few classes, but none really stood out until I took a class about political philosophy. I really loved the class, but I wasn’t sure if I would like other political science classes, so my advisor suggested taking a philosophy course. I had never considered philosophy, but after taking a few philosophy classes, I absolutely fell in love with it. Philosophy makes me so excited about learning, and I couldn’t imagine a better major for me.
The best part about the Honors College, to me, is the community. Coming from such a small school, OSU was a big change. Being in the Honors College, you meet a lot of incredible people, and get to see familiar faces all across campus. From living in West, to Honors College trips, to spending time in the SLUG, to taking honors courses, I’ve gotten to know a lot of people in the Honors College. It has been an invaluable addition to my college experience, and some of my best friends now I met through being in the Honors College.
Outside of class I’m also a member of the Marching Band where I play the piccolo. I enjoy swimming, playing with my dog and going to the beach. If you have any questions about my experience with the Honors College, University Exploratory Studies, or OSU in general, please feel free to reach out to me!
