As stated in the Oregon State University General Catalog, all Honors College students must maintain a 3.25 cumulative OSU grade point average and make satisfactory progress toward completing honors degree requirements to remain enrolled in the HC. Progress in three key areas—GPA, coursework, and thesis—will be reviewed every fall, winter, and spring term.
Please read the requirements carefully, as students who do not meet these expectations may be removed from the HC. If removed, a student has the right to petition for reinstatement (see below).
HC students must maintain at least a 3.25 OSU cumulative GPA to remain enrolled in the college and receive an honors baccalaureate degree. Transfer credits are not considered in calculating this GPA.
Any student whose OSU cumulative GPA falls below 3.25 will be notified that they have been placed on GPA alert. Any student whose OSU cumulative GPA remains below 3.25 for a second term will receive a GPA warning.After a third consecutive term below the minimum the student will be notified of removal from the HC.
Students who are on GPA alert or GPA warning will receive email notification regarding next steps. Once a student’s OSU cumulative GPA is above 3.25, they will return to good standing; if their GPA falls again below 3.25 in a subsequent term, they will return to GPA alert status.
All enrolled HC students must complete at least one honors credit every academic year toward the HC degree requirements. Any student who has not earned an honors credit within the past year will be advised of the actions required to remain in the HC. If these actions are not completed, the student will be removed from the HC.
All enrolled HC students must complete the Stage 1 workshop, submit a thesis map, and meet the progress milestones established on that map. Any student who has not completed the workshop or has missed a thesis map deadline will be advised of the actions required to remain in the HC. If these actions are not completed, the student will be removed from the HC.
To remain in good standing as an Honors College student, all of these requirements must be met:
Year Four and Beyond
Students who are unable to comply with any element of the HC Retention and Satisfactory Progress Policy within the timeline permitted may be eligible to apply for an extension. Extensions are for one term; students may apply in two consecutive terms, but approval for the first term does not guarantee approval for the second term. Extensions are typically restricted to students who have experienced or are experiencing unforeseen changes in their circumstances. Students should consult with a HC advisor before applying for an extension. Approval is dependent upon an assessment that it is possible and probable that the applicant will achieve compliance within the extension period. Students may apply for an extension twice during their tenure in the HC. The deadline to submit an extension is Tuesday of week 1 of term of scheduled removal from the HC, and students will be notified of decisions via their ONID email account by Friday of week 1 of that term.
A student who has been removed from the HC may petition for reinstatement. Petitions must include both an explanation of how the circumstances that resulted in removal from the HC have changed and a detailed plan for completion of the honors degree requirements. Students must have an OSU cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater at the time of the petition to receive consideration. Students wishing to be reinstated should complete a petition. Students will be notified of decisions via their ONID email account within 14 business days of petition submission.
