A Decade of Growth: How Space, Technology and People Shaped the Honors College

By Kallie Hagel on March 13, 2025

"For our final week this term, we take a look at three stories from the 2005-2015 era that highlight the growth and expansion of the Honors College. These stories reflect the college’s evolution in terms of space, technology and personnel — each contributing to the high-quality learning environment we value today.

The first article, from the 2007 Honors Link, titled “Office and Classroom Renovation is Complete,” celebrates the completion of a new honors classroom, featuring VCR capabilities and other updates. Looking back, this piece serves as a reminder of how far the HC has come technologically in just a few short years and underscores the college’s commitment to providing students with comfortable, productive environments for learning.

The 2008 Honors Link story, “New Faces on Old Places,” focuses on the renovation of SLUG I and SLUG II, adding computer workspaces, iMac stations and interactive whiteboards. The renovation also made SLUG more accessible, reinforcing the HC’s commitment to inclusivity and creating welcoming spaces for all learners.

Finally, the 2010 Honors Link article “New Faces, New Roles — Staff Changes Prepare the UHC for Continued Growth,” highlights the new staff who brought valuable programs and fresh perspectives to the HC. The article emphasizes how these changes, such as Toni Doolen’s new pedagogical approach, helped prepare students for long-term success after graduation. It’s a reminder that growth isn’t just about infrastructure and technology—it’s also about the people who contribute to the HC’s mission of excellence.

As we look back on this decade of expansion, we also recognize a pivotal moment in 2015, when the Honors College ended its second decade by moving into new facilities in the Learning Innovation Center (LInC). This marked the rebirth of the SLUG, now located on the third floor of the LInC, and solidified the college’s commitment to providing innovative, accessible spaces for students. The move to the LInC remains an important milestone, and the SLUG continues to be a central hub for Honors College students in Corvallis, fostering collaboration and learning in a dynamic environment.

The careful thought, planning and effort invested in these initiatives have all helped shape the Honors College into the vibrant and inclusive space it is today — a place where students can thrive, collaborate and grow." — Ava Wittman, Honors College Student Writer
