Finding a mentor is one of the most important steps in the thesis process. A strong mentor-student relationship can make a determinative difference in providing a satisfying and successful thesis experience. It is therefore important to consider a range of factors, not just area of expertise, as you think about selecting a faculty mentor and forming a committee. There is no single way to approach the mentor-student relationship, so you must strive to find the kind of support that will best serve your particular work style, strengths, and needs.

Determine whether your potential mentor and committee members are eligible to serve on HC Thesis committees. To be mentor-eligible, faculty must be professorial faculty (assistant professor, associate professor, professor of research/ practice/ clinical) or senior instructor (I or II). Faculty titles and research interests are listed on department web pages, usually in a directory. Faculty not holding these positions must be approved by petition. If you have questions about a specific person, please contact your HC academic advisor.

Determine whether your potential mentor is willing and able to take on the responsibility of guiding you through an undergraduate thesis process. Provide the potential mentor with a copy of the HC’s Thesis Mentor Guidelines.

Form a 4-person thesis team:

  1. You, the student researcher
  2. An eligible faculty mentor
  3. An eligible OSU faculty committee member, and
  4. An eligible OSU or expert-at-large committee member.
