January 15, 2023 is the deadline for applications for ALL 2023-2024 offerings (including summer 2023, fall 2023, winter 2024, and spring 2024).

Thank you for your interest in teaching in the Honors College! This proposal form is for Honors sections of existing OSU courses (3- or 4-credit courses that exist in the OSU Catalog). If you are trying to propose an HC colloquium (HC 407, HC 299), do not use this form. To find the full call for coursework and more information on Honors College courses and policies, visit the Colloquium Proposals & Honors College Coursework page.

If you missed the deadline, have questions, or would like to discuss a course idea, please e-mail or call Susan Rodgers, Honors College Associate Dean, at [email protected] or 541-737-6412.

Only submit this form if you have already spoken to HC Associate Dean Susan Rodgers about this course and she provided you with this link. If she did not provide you with the link to this form, contact her at [email protected] or 541-737-6412 for more information.

You will need the following information to submit your proposal, so gather these items before you begin:

  • The name and email of your supervisor
  • Your 9-digit OSU ID number
  • The course description for the offering (for students, to describe what the class is about)
  • Your general schedule availability for when this course may be offered if it's selected and approved (be prepared to list M/W/F options and T/R options)
  • Any information related to potential expenses for this course (field trips, lab demonstrations, special equipment - anything that might require students to pay a course fee to cover expenses)
  • How this course offers Experiential Learning and demonstrates Honors Pedagogy
  • A draft syllabus for this offering (even a very rough draft is okay - it doesn't need to be finished or polished)
  • If there will be a co-instructor for this offering, you will need their:
    • 9-digit OSU ID number
    • their supervisor's name and email
    • the college/school/department/unit/office they belong to

All proposed courses, including courses that have been offered in the past, will only be considered with your supervisor's approval. Your supervisor will automatically be sent an email requesting approval, which will include your proposed course, description, and the operating index they provided you for the transfer of funds. We cannot consider your proposal until we receive these approvals, so please verify names and e-mail addresses are correct before submitting.

This should be the person who approves your workload, FTE, etc. and can approve you taking on additional workload to teach this HC offering.
TYPE THIS CAREFULLY - TYPOS MEAN YOUR PROPOSAL MAY NOT BE APPROVED. This should be an official OSU email (ending with @oregonstate.edu). Do not enter a personal email address here.

This should be your official OSU email (ending with @oregonstate.edu), which you will need to check on a regular basis for communications about this proposal and offering, should your proposal be selected and approved. Do not enter a personal email address here unless you are completely new to OSU and do not have an OSU email address.

Please note that summer offerings are very rare. Only select summer here if you have already spoken to HC Associate Dean Susan Rodgers about it.
Please note that all Corvallis and Cascades course offerings are going to be offered on-campus and in-person, unless an exemption has been approved by EOA. Aside from EOA exemptions, Honors College courses and colloquia will NOT be offered in a remote format (over Zoom). Please note that new E-campus options must go through the E-campus proposal & development system in addition to this proposal process, which has very strict deadlines. More info at https://ecampus.oregonstate.edu/faculty/courses/
Which OSU Course are you proposing an honors section of? Note that the course must exist in the OSU Catalog (https://catalog.oregonstate.edu/), as this is not a proposal system for brand new courses.
Is this class normally crosslisted (meaning it has two course numbers that students can register for, but it's a single class that meets together at the same time)? If yes, please provide the other course number it's usually crosslisted with. For example, PHL 444 is usually crosslisted with REL 444, and ME 312 is usually crosslisted with NSE 312.
Note that this must match how the course is usually offered at OSU

If your colloquium is selected and approved, this will be published to students so they can read more about your colloquium while they're planning for registration. This does not replace the general catalog description in the OSU schedule online, but is published to students via the Honors College office and website: https://honors.oregonstate.edu/class-schedule
If no, enter "No" in the box below. If yes, explain the activity/field trip in the box below. Is student participation in this out-of-classroom experience REQUIRED in order for students to pass the class, or is it optional?

Scheduling Class Days & Times

Scheduling HC offerings often requires negotiations and adjustments. Please enter your availability for both Monday/Wednesday/Friday options AND Tuesday/Thursday options - we are required to offer a wide variety of days and times that spread as evenly as possible across Monday-Friday and 8 am - 6 pm.

Should this course proposal be selected and approved, we will also be working with the unit related to this course's discipline to find a time that will work well for the honors students majoring in that discipline. The preferences you list below will be taken into account as much as possible, but classroom availability, discipline-specific curriculum needs, and HC curriculum needs will all play a part in finding a good day/time for this course.

Please list your general availability for both MWF meeting patterns and TR meeting patterns.

1-hour meetings can start on any hour, 1.5- or 2-hour meetings are required to start on even hours.

Classoom Attributes

Please select the classroom features you need in order to teach this course. If you need a specific class feature, you must indicate that here to make sure your course is placed in a suitable classroom.

For example, if you need movable seating rather than stationary seating, you must select that option below. Similarly, if you specifically need tables instead of individual desks, you must select that option below.

If you do not indicate the classroom features you need here, they will not be considered when placing courses in classrooms. Please read the options carefully.

You can only choose a maximum of three of these, so choose carefully. Anything you select after the initial three will not be taken into account when scheduling.
Course fees for honors sections of existing OSU courses typically match whatever the OSU course has for fees. However, sometimes an honors section of a course will host an activity or field trip that does not take place in the non-honors offering. Would this class have an experience for the students that has associated costs? For example, any course that has a field trip will need a course fee to cover the costs of the motor pool van rentals and any related admissions fees for the destination of the field trip.
If the expenses are for an event/activity/field trip(s) please provide the purpose, number, and location(s) for each. If the expenses are for materials you would need to provide for an activity (not textbooks or materials the students purchase individually), please information about what the materials are, what they're used for, how you acquire them, and what pricing typically is. Fees have to go through an approval process well in advance of even scheduling the class, and if the details about the purpose, location, and specific prices are not included, the fee will not be approved. Please provide as many specific details as possible.
Please attach a draft of your syllabus for the proposed course, even if it is not yet finalized (even very early rough drafts are okay). This will aid the committee in determining the unique elements of your course.
Files must be less than 2 MB.
Allowed file types: pdf doc docx.

Faculty who are not currently employed at or affiliated with OSU will be hired on the HC instructor pool at an adjusted rate. Faculty who have questions about the Honors College instructor pool or the rates associated with the Honors College instructor pool should contact Brittany Sundberg (HC Admissions and Curriculum Coordinator) at [email protected].
