UHC Beginnings

By Kallie Hagel on Oct. 3, 2024

This 2002 piece by HC student Jane Clark, ‘05 (H.B.A., Political Science), from the Chronicle, a student-written and edited publication for many years in the college, explores the origins and establishment of the Honors College at Oregon State, marking it as the eleventh degree-granting honors program in the United States. It reveals a rich and perhaps surprising history, including the closure due to budget cuts of the honors program that preexisted the establishment of the Honors College. By demonstrating what’s possible when people believe in a shared idea, this story highlights that, despite the many forms honors education at Oregon State University has taken over the years, its core values have remained steady. — Ava Wittman, Student Writer
